During the past couple of months, I’ve had the opportunity to be a contractor at a non-profit organization. It was a $4 million, 40-employee organization that helps young people choose the right path in life. I had interviewed for a Marketing position there, and completed several writing assignments as part of the interview process. After six weeks, they offered me a contracting role to see if I was a “culture fit.”
The agency was in upheaval as some key employees had recently given notice. I experienced a lot of chaos and confusion, and decisions from management seemed to move slowly. I’m not sure if this is indicative of a lot of non-profits, or limited to circumstances there. In the end, they decided they needed to hire a Grant Manager more than a Marketing Manager. I was grateful for the opportunity to test-drive the organization before making a commitment, I’m hopeful that 2014 will bring the right opportunity.
